Want To Lower Rents? Apartment Owners Group Says Eliminate Double Property Tax

If the province wants to address affordable housing, it needs to look at double property taxation, says the president of the New Brunswick Apartment Owners Association (NBAOA).
In New Brunswick, non-owner-occupied buildings are charged double the property tax. It’s the only province in Canada with such a tax.
NBAOA president Willy Scholten, who is also the chief financial officer of Fredericton-based Colpitts Developments, says property taxes represent 40-45 percent of the operating costs of rental properties in the province and are the single largest expense and directly linked to how much rent is charged. ....

New group calls on Higgs government for better tenant protection

Raven Blue is part of a new group in Saint John that aims to better protect tenants from evictions, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tenants living in Saint John have started a group to better protect renters from evictions in New Brunswick.
Over the course of several months, tenants from different apartment buildings across the province have been evicted from their homes as they are purchased and renovated by investors from across the country, who later increase the rent.
Tenants are without protection, said Raven Blue, an advocate for tenants living in Saint John. ....
