Optimism blooms in earnings season
After closing the books on the second quarter, executives are the most positive they have ever been about the profits their companies are generating, according to data from FactSet. And that might be a good sign that bottom-line growth will continue even after the expected rebound from the pandemic economic plunge.
Companies begin reporting their second quarter profits this week. Things really kick off tomorrow, when Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and PepsiCo publish their earnings before the market opens. The big banks, in particular, are likely to reveal bumper profits, The Times’s Lananh Nguyen reports. ....

FDA Approves Biden Administration's Menthol Ban on Cigarettes and Other Flavored Cigars

With intentions to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars, the administration of the U.S. President Joe Biden made an announcement on Thursday to ban those tobacco products.
Based on the Food and Drug Administration, the studies suggest that the ban on menthol would help individuals to quit smoking. The FDA noted that menthol makes tobacco more palatable and the flavor facilitates progression to regular smoking, especially to youth and young adults.
According to CBS News, the acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock M.D. stated that the banning of menthol, which is the last allowable flavor in cigarettes, and banning all flavors in cigars will help save lives. She also added that the move will help lessen those affected by these deadly products. ....

Accompanying this essay is a picture of Khalil Yusef Ali Jabarin. At the time the picture was taken Jabarin was a 16-year-old Palestinian minor from the Arab village of Yatta, south of Hebron. Israeli police detained, arrested and jailed Khalil. Like so many other Palestinian minors, he will never be free again, and the Israeli army destroyed his family home to “act determinedly to prevent terror attacks and to deter terrorists.” His family will never be with him again and they’ve lost their home. It’s heartbreaking. ....

House Ag passes stimulus package provisions

The House Agriculture Committee passed the $16.1 billion agriculture and nutrition provisions of the budget reconciliation legislation which moves forward President Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package. It passed on a party-line 25-23 vote with Republicans complaining that they had been left out of the process.
The legislation addresses the “long standing and widespread discrimination against socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers” regarding USDA’s farm loan programs by providing debt relief and assistance for Black farmers and other minority farmers. Republicans suggest the debt relief provisions could be unconstitutional and face legal challenges.
A majority of the funding increases support for nutrition programs. It also provides additional funding for protective equipment investments for farm and food workers, assists small meat and poultry processers with overtime inspection costs and expands USDA’s surveillance of COVID-19 and animals. ....
