CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas â The Texas State Legislature recently passed two proposals penned by State Representative Todd Hunter; one of them being the JeâSani Smith Act.
The JeâSani Smith Act is named after a King High School student who drowned at a local beach in 2019.
House Bill 3807, the JeâSani Smith Act, would require cities, counties, and the Parks and Wildlife Department to add signs and lifeguards by each pier, jetty, or other structure that extends into the Gulf of Mexico on public beaches. House Concurrent Resolution 46 would designate April as âBeach Safety and Rip Current Awareness Monthâ in Texas. ....

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas It s been a couple of weeks since the winter storm in Texas, and many are now getting hit hard by their electric providers, ending up with massive electricity bills some as high as $5,000.
Former Corpus Christi Mayor Joe McComb is echoing the frustration felt by many consumers and is now going on record accusing those electric providers of price gouging, which of course is illegal.
The Deceptive Trade Practice and the gouging law has to apply, McComb said. ....

(Reuters) - Texas state lawmakers on Thursday dug into the causes and cast blame for deadly power blackouts that left millions shivering in the dark as frigid temperatures caught its grid operator and utilities ill-prepared for skyrocketing power demand.
Dual hearings in the state House and Senate are highlighting shortcomings by grid planners, electric utilities, natural gas suppliers, renewable energy and transmission operators that led to billions of dollars in damages and dozens of deaths. ....

Texas Power Retailer Hit With $1Billion Class Action Suit Claiming ‘Price Gouging’ After Soaring Bills
A Texas resident has filed a class action lawsuit seeking over $1 billion against power retailer Griddy Energy LLC, alleging the wholesale company of engaging in “price gouging” and unlawfully charging thousands of dollars.
Lisa Khoury of Chambers County claims she was charged with an excessive electricity bill during a deadly winter storm that knocked many power supply facilities offline, according to a petition (pdf) filed with the Harris County District Court.
Attorneys representing Khoury said in the suit the utility customers’ bill for the period of Feb. 1–19 spiked to a total of $9,546. Her monthly bill normally averages between $200 and $250 and she usually keeps a $150 balance in her account to pay the bills. ....
