Addict who turned life around set to run Brighton marathon


Gabriel Wood from Brighton started abusing alcohol and drugs from a “very young age.”
At his lowest point, he became homeless and would sleep in a tent in parks around Brighton and Hove, including Stanmer Park, East Brighton Park and Queens Park.

The 43-year-old used several substances. However, he says he was at his worst when he was drinking.
Gabriel said: “Alcohol was the one that did the most damage to me, even though I went through every drug.
“I thought it was the safest option and I thought it wouldn’t affect me mentally in the way drugs do, but it really messed me up. I was suffering psychosis and I used to have fits. ....

Brighton ranked as 'worst city in UK for single renters'


BRIGHTON has ranked as the least affordable city in the UK for single renters, according to a new study.
The research found those renting alone in the city would have the least amount of money left over after their outgoings on bills, rent and groceries, compared with other cities across the UK - including London.
On average, single renters in Brighton were found to have £149.60 left over - compared with an average of £1,526.24 for single people renting in Aberdeen.
The research used the average rent prices across all kinds of property, as well as average salaries after tax and the cost of groceries, to calculate average outgoings. ....

Sussex domestic abuse: Criminals targeted by new police unit


Dangerous criminals will be subject to the new High Harm Domestic Abuse (DA) Perpetrator Unit in Sussex.
It follows government funding worth £400,000 to crack down on those who batter their partners and think they can escape the consequences.
Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne says the unit will track down the “most active, dangerous and serial perpetrators of domestic abuse”.
The unit will address the reasons why the thugs commit the abusive crimes.
Among the new team will be detectives and those with the role of supervising criminals in the community, and they will be joined by a mental health worker from Brighton Housing Trust, a drugs and alcohol worker from the charity Change Grow Live, an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor from Worth Services, and probation-trained officers from Seetec Justice. ....

G&S Clearance donates unwanted goods to charity


A WASTE company has been donating all unwanted items to a housing charity.
G&S Clearance have been managing the property clearance and full-waste management recycling process from hotel chains, The Granville and Cecil Hotels, located in Brighton.
To help those in need, the company has been donating goods from the 38-bedroom hotel, including towels and linens to Brighton Housing Trust, a local housing association and homeless charity.
Adrian Westwood, chief executor and founder of G&S said he hopes to support those who are struggling.
He said: It’s been a pleasure working with and supporting The Brighton Housing Trust, and it was by lucky coincidence that we came across them. ....
