Everything Our Editors Loved in May

With summer just around the corner, we spent the month of May enjoying absorbing accounts of surf culture around the world, a fascinating field
guide to our hometown of Santa Fe, and a reality competition series that inspired one editor to pick up a new hobby. Here are the books, films, and shows that
Outside staff couldn’t get enough of last month.
What We Read
Like everything under the Wildsam umbrella, the company’s new Santa Fe Field Guide is so much more than just a guidebook. Complete with striking illustrations, interviews with locals, and thoughtful passages about important issues (like water access, child hunger, the Pueblo Revolt, and Indigenous culture preservation), the book delivers a thoughtful snapshot of its subject. I’ve been reading bits of it before bed, and while it may seem odd to read a travel book about my own town, I’ve learned a ton about Santa Fe’s history plus, I have some new restaurants I want to check out! A Story of Three Churches: In the Footsteps of Willa Cather in Northern New Mexico

1. El Santuario de Chimayó
We arrived in Chimayó in the lull after Easter. Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the small hamlet lies about forty-five minutes north of Santa Fe. If I hadn’t seen videos of the great crowds that throng the sanctuary during Holy Week, I wouldn’t have believed this humble adobe church in the middle of nowhere could be the host of the largest number of religious pilgrims in the U.S but that is what it is.
Known as the “Lourdes of North America,” many come in search of a cure for as an old woman says, in Willa Cather’s 1927 novel ....

Hispanic and Native American leaders, whose dispute over the annual re-enactment of a 17th-century Spanish conquistador reclaiming Santa Fe has been compared to the debate over Confederate monuments, announced plans Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, aimed at reconciliation. On the Santa Fe Trail: 1821-2021 - True West Magazine

On the Santa Fe Trail: 1821-2021
The bicentennial of the National Historic Trail is a great reason to hit the road and rediscover why it is the West’s original “Mother Road.”
When you get right down to it, almost every trail ever blazed was for profit. Despite all the glory associated with them, the lure of money was behind the Chisholm Trail (first for trade goods, then for selling longhorns in Kansas)and the California and Klondike trails (to find goldfields) and the like. The Santa Fe Trail, on the other hand, never even thought about fame it was all about money. ....

'Not easily forgotten': Mission San José de Laguna is a center of the community, and a favorite of history buffs and tourists

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Editor’s note: The Journal continues “What’s in a Name?,” a twice a month column in which staff writer Elaine Briseño will give a short history of how places in New Mexico got their names.
Perched on a hill about 40 miles west of Albuquerque, San José de Laguna’s white-washed walls rise like a beacon from the brown and yellow terrain that surround it.

The mission church is as old as the Keresan-speaking pueblo community created there in 1699. Franciscan missionary Friar Antonio de Miranda established and named the church, which was constructed between 1699 and 1701. ....
