Bravo! Vail The New York Philharmonic returns to the Vail Valley this week for their residency with Bravo! Vail. As the oldest symphony orchestra in America and one of the most prominent in the world, the New York Philharmonic has been a highlight at Bravo! Vail since they began performing at the festival in 2003. The full orchestra will give six concerts at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater between July 21 and July 28, and the New York Philharmonic String Quartet will stage a chamber concert on Tuesday, July 20 at the Vilar Performing Arts Center. Tuesday’s chamber performance starts at 7 p.m. and features the New York Philharmonic String Quartet performing Mendelssohn and Schumann, accompanied by Bravo! Vail Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott on the piano. ....

Tabla player Zakir Hussain, the Symphony Orchestra of India, and Tushar Bhatia’s music group Swaradhara will perform Bhatia’s tunes. The 90-year-old composer will attend the event. Vanraj Bhatia is preeminent among the handful of Indian musicians who have studied Western classical music in depth and have then successfully mixed that knowledge with an understanding of Hindustani classical music. His studies and the resulting scholarships and awards gave him a more substantial and sustained exposure to Western musical thought than perhaps ....
An ogre sings outdoors in ‘Shrek’ “Shrek, the Musical,” the stage version of the hit animated film, is usually produced with a cast of roughly 30 playing everyone from the green ogre named Shrek to dozens of fairy tale characters. All of them will be on hand, but in a different way in a new outdoor production presented by the Dingbat Theatre Project. All the actors play multiple characters and manipulate a variety of puppets. It is staged by founder Luke Manual McFatrich (he also plays Dragon) and is choreographed by Brian Finnerty (who also plays Lord Farquaad). Cory Woomert plays Shrek, Alyssa Goudy is Princess Fiona and Derric Gobourne Jr. is Donkey. The cast also includes Noelia Altamirano, Amanda Heisey and Jamie Molina. Performances are outdoors at the Bazaar on Apricot and Lime, 821 Apricot Ave., Sarasota, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and May 13-15.
