One of downtown Gardner’s favorite bakeries, Plainview Bakery, was a Central Street landmark for many years, as seen in this photo from 1960.
Located in what has been called “The Central Building” at 271-277 Central St., it moved there beginning in the late 1950s after originally being located at 19 Parker St.
Plainview Bakery was originally opened on Parker Street by Gustaf Ohman in 1921. Ohman, who previously ran Ohman’s Bakery on Central Street, opened Plainview, which he ran until 1923. It was later operated by Eric Olgander (1924-1925) and then Charles Palvio, who came to this country from Finland in 1913. ....

Then and Now: A look back at Gardner's very first pizza joint, Buffo's, and the others that followed

Pizza may have been first sold in Gardner at the former Buffo’s Spaghetti House

What’s happened to all of the pizza joints in Gardner?
Of course, I am being facetious, but at one time there was more than a dozen places in the city where you could purchase a pizza pie in these parts.
It nearly became a joke of sorts that a city the size of Gardner had more pizza joints per capita than most communities statewide.
However, that number is dwindling to the point where now there are only eight places in Gardner to buy pizza. ....

Then and Now: The famed Co-op and other grocery stores along West Street in Gardner
City has three supermarkets today, but 60 years ago there were four within a quarter of a mile of each other downtown

Special for The Gardner News
At the present time there are three supermarkets in Gardner – Hannaford, Price Chopper and the Walmart Supercenter.
However, if you go back 60 years ago, there were four supermarkets within a quarter of a mile in the downtown Gardner area alone.
And that doesn’t even count the more than three dozen mom and pop corner stores that also inhabited that section of the city. ....

Employees of Gardner business meet with company representatives to help create a unique flavor, which launches on Feb. 6
Gardner News
GARDNER Even though Anthony’s Liquor Mart is currently in its 86th year, its owners are still celebrating its 85th anniversary with something special for its customers: the store will officially launch an exclusive Maker’s Mark whiskey on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Owner James Kraskouskas recently tasked two of his employees to create a uniquely flavored bourbon to celebrate its eight and a half decades of serving the community. Originally, Chris Trembly and Bob Canu were to travel to the Maker’s Mark Distillery in Kentucky to mix various flavors into a cask of bourbon whiskey and come up with a final product that would be exclusive to the Pearson Boulevard store.
