마라도는 건물도 많지 않고 지형이 평평해 비와 바람이 심한 날이면 여유롭게 경관을 즐기기가 쉽지 않다. 이웃한 가파도 역시 그렇다. [사진 박헌정]
월요일 오전이다. 모처럼 일정이 비는 한 주, 지루하고 심심한 일상이 될까봐 덜컥 겁이 났다. 그건 아주 끔찍한 일이다. 탈출하자! “여보, 잠깐 제주도에 다녀올게.” 달랑 배낭 하나 메고 가까운 군산공항으로 향했다.

다음 날 아침 올레길을 걷기 위해 숙소를 나서는데 비가 한두 방울씩 떨어지기 시작한다. ‘이러면 걷는 게 즐겁지 않은데….’ 잠시 고민하다 마라도로 목적지를 바꾸었다. 국토 최남단 방문, 의미 있는 여행이 될 것 같았다.
