New design brand Mino Soil unearths the creative potential of Japanese clay
The first in a series of exhibitions, ‘Archeology of Mino: in collaboration with Studio Mumbai’ explores the creative potential and ‘brutal beauty’ of clay from the Mino region and marks the debut of ceramics brand Mino Soil

Abu Dhabi's Warehouse421 to offer new open calls and artist grants, including one up to Dh75,000


Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi, has today announced a major new five-year plan for public programming.
The team is taking a radical step in a new direction, saying it will generate about 80 per cent of its programming using the results of new training schemes
and grants
. This includes five open calls, which will offer mid-career artists and curators across the Menasa region a chance to improve their work.
“We asked ourselves, How we can build an infrastructure to raise capabilities locally and regionally? ” says Faisal Al Hassan, general manager

“Who
isn’t?” Michael Anastassiades replies, when asked if he is inspired by Alexander Calder, the American sculptor known for his mobiles. Last year, when named Maison & Objet Designer of the Year 2020, Anastassiades hypnotized curious onlookers with “16 Acts,” an installation of 16 mobile chandeliers. With small motors setting them in motion, the mobiles created a soothing geometric light show and memorable retreat from the busy tradeshow floor during the winter edition of the usually bi-annual Paris furniture fair (The Fall 2020 edition was canceled due to COVID-19).
Since founding his studio in 1994, the London-based Cypriot designer has worked with the likes of B&B Italia, Cassina, and Herman Miller. In 2007, he founded his namesake manufacturing label, in order to also produce his own lighting and objects and, as he says, “express my ideas in the most uncompromising manner.” ....

.- The fourteenth Alvar Aalto Medal has been awarded to the Indian architectural office Studio Mumbai and its director Bijoy Jain. In making its selection, the jury emphasized the studio’s skilful synthesis of architecture and craftsmanship. Studio Mumbai s work reflects an understanding of the unique geographical, climatic and social characteristics of the environment, giving insightful consideration to them in their design work.
The award was presented to the medallist in February at the Finnish Embassy in New Delhi, India.
