The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi has sprung a surprise with party chief and chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) picking 69-year-old Surabhi Vani Devi as its candidate for the Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahbubnagar graduates constituency in the MLC elections. She is a last-minute choice whose name was announced barely 48 hours before nominations were closed on February 23. Earlier indications were that the TRS would give the constituency a miss as, despite its best efforts, it has not been successful in the past here.
