Nate Barnes, “You Ain’t Pretty”
Nate Barnes’ single “You Ain’t Pretty” has been picking up steam at country radio, and with good reason: It’s a winningly romantic country song in the Tim McGraw mold. “Every time’s like an angel walked in, stealin’ my heart again and again,” Barnes sings over big, ringing electric guitars in the chorus. The Peel Sessions 1991-2004. The live recording compilation collects the singer-songwriter’s various performances on BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel’s radio show from the early ’90s through the beginning of the aughts. It was originally released in 2006, two years after Peel’s death, and has been remastered under the guidance of longtime Harvey collaborator John Parish. I really feel like her album Chris really inspired me going forward, writing my own tunes because she knows how to have fun with her music. It’s pop music at its finest. I think she always writes a good chorus, good backing vocals. I remember listening to an interview with her once where she said she loves harmonies and that harmonies to her were like chocolate, and I love that.
