The leader of the B.C. Green Party is tabling legislation she believes could lead to therapy, counselling and social work finally becoming fully regulated in this province.
Sonia Furstenau is introducing a private member s bill on Wednesday afternoon that would amend the Health Professions Act so the health minister is compelled to take action when regulation of a profession is determined to be in the public interest. ....

An Indigenous youth who was in care of Robert Riley Saunders when he was working as a social worker in Kelowna, B.C., says they would like youth to have a chance to tell Saunders how his alleged actions have affected them.
Saunders is alleged to have stolen basic living allowances from more than 100, mostly Indigenous, youth who were in his care between 1996 and 2018. He’s facing 13 criminal charges, including ten counts of fraud over $5,000, one count of theft over $5,000, one count of breach of trust, and one count of uttering a forged document. ....

Ministry could have prevented Kelowna worker's decades of alleged fraud, social work organization says

VANCOUVER
The head of the professional association for social workers in British Columbia says the recent arrest of former Kelowna caseworker Robert Riley Saunders underscores a fundamental problem with the way the provincial Ministry of Children and Family Development operates.
Saunders was arrested in Alberta earlier this month and is charged with multiple counts of fraud, as well as theft, breach of trust and forgery, all stemming from his more than two decades working for the ministry.
The province has already settled a class action lawsuit involving more than 100 of Saunders alleged victims, admitting in the settlement that harm was caused to children in the ministry s care. ....
