Hydrogen a focal point of UBC’s $23m renewable energy hub
The University of British Columbia (UBC) has unveiled major plans for a $23m renewable energy hub that will transform an entire city block into a smart energy district – and the plans include one of the province’s first hydrogen refuelling stations.
Unveiling such ambitions on Wednesday (5
th May), project lead Dr. Walter Mérida, said the hub will become a city-scale, “living laboratory” that explores critical links between energy, transportation and urban design.
A key feature of the development will be a water electrolyser that will use electricity from the hub’s solar panels to split water into hydrogen and oxygen to produce 100% clean hydrogen that will then be utilised at the onsite hydrogen station for light and heavy-duty vehicles. ....

Work begins on $23-million renewable energy hub at UBC in Vancouver

Work has begun on a new $23-million renewable energy hub at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
An entire city block is being transformed into an energy district to include the first hydrogen refuelling station for light and heavy-duty vehicles in the province.
B.C.’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation has contributed $5.6 million toward the project in low-carbon fuel standard credits. Other funding is coming from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, BC Knowledge Development Fund, Natural Resources Canada, Western Economic Diversification Canada and industry partners.

World's most powerful microscope is ready for research - Lab Canada

Victoria, BC – What the University of Victoria says is the world’s most powerful microscope – which resides in a specially constructed room at the university – has been fully assembled and tested, and is ready for scientific research.
The seven-tonne, 4.5-metre tall scanning transmission electron holography microscope (STEHM), the first such microscope of its type in the world, came to the university in parts last year. A team from Hitachi, which constructed the ultra high-resolution, ultra-stable instrument, spent one year painstakingly assembling the STEHM in a carefully controlled lab in the university’s Bob Wright Centre.

The wait was worth it, says Rodney Herring, a professor of mechanical engineering and director of UVic’s Advanced Microscopy Facility. ....

New cutting edge KPU research centre helps local agricultural sector find solutions

A new research facility at Kwantlen Polytechnic University is using molecular genetics and metabolomics – the study of DNA and other molecules within cells – to help develop solutions for various industries in the Metro Vancouver region.
“The KPU Applied Genomics Centre is focused on using genomic and metabolomic tools to help various industry partners within the agriculture sector to improve product development and product consistency through various types of applied research and development projects. In addition, the Centre performs some human health research using genetic tools to better understand the genetic underpinnings of human disease” says Dr. Paul Adams, scientific director of the KPU Applied Genomics Centre (AGC). ....
