San Pasqual Academy Is Still Fighting for Its Life
Community members are celebrating another extension staving off closure, but said that county leaders need to work harder to keep the school open long term. They believe the facility provides a crucial option for foster youth who don’t have stable homes to live in.

San Pasqual Academy can keep its doors open a little longer but its ultimate fate is still unclear, and it’s causing turmoil between the school community and state and county leaders. The young people who live at the boarding school for foster youth in Escondido don’t know whether they’re going to be able to live and attend school there next summer, or if the next year is going to be a long transitioning process out of the campus. ....

State lays out conditions to keep San Pasqual Academy open longer; advocates say it only delays closure

Agreement allowing the boarding school for foster children will end as state seeks to discourage placing children in congregate living facilities.
Several foster care advocates and campus staff joined Tia Moore, director of San Pasqual, and Shane Harris, government affairs liaison of San Pasqual, outside the Escondido boarding school Tuesday for a press conference to urge county officials to
continue negotiating
with the state to get them to allow new students to enroll.
They say the state’s extension terms outlined by its Department of Social Services are intended to kill the program.
“To say that you are no longer going to send youth to this campus is to say that this academy will close,” said Harris, who also is a former student of the academy. “To say that you are not going to send any more youth to this campus is to say that you don’t care about . our county’s foster care children having alternative options.” ....

The news last week that San Pasqual Academy would need to close this fall took staff and students by surprise, and by late last week they joined former students and others in a campaign to save the boarding school for foster children.

ESCONDIDO (KUSI) – The state of California has written a letter dictating that the San Pasqual Academy, an educational and residential academy for foster kids, will be shut down in October.
According to the letter, low enrollment and changes in state and federal law are the reasons for closure.
Mark Powell, Former County Board of Education Vice President and adjunct professor, told KUSI’s Elizabeth Alvarez on Good Morning San Diego that the reason for declining enrollment is not up to the foster kids, but instead up to their judges, who have been placing them in foster homes rather than in SPA. ....
