China Town shopping mall in Dhaka s Paltan area was shut down for around four hours after its authorities failed to follow health safety rules this morning.

Handset sales down 40pc since January
Sales of mobile handsets have dropped more than 40 per cent in April compared to the January level after consumers tightened their belt as they see no immediate end to the coronavirus pandemic.   
And amidst the second wave of Covid-19 infections, sales have fallen further as the government introduced movement restrictions and lockdowns.
The sales were great during the first six months of the current fiscal as the pandemic led to soaring digitalisation. Many people had to purchase digital devices to cope with the new normal, including remote offices and virtual meetings.
The country s top mobile phone manufacturers and assemblers said that they had started trying to sell the devices online after the new surge of the virus. ....

Both shoppers and shopkeepers in a number of city markets on Friday, the first day of market reopening after four days of shutdown, largely ignored health restrictions imposed by the government amid worsening COVID-19 situation.
Traders said that no government agency visited their markets on the first day while the number of customers was very low.
On April 4, the Cabinet Division issued an 11-point instruction restricting public movement and businesses and banning operations of all modes of public transport, including domestic flights, across the country for a week with effect from Monday. ....
