Asheville students back after a year of COVID, 32% opting out

ASHEVILLE - It was the strangest of first school days.
For one, it was cold not the typical late summer day with students skipping toward the school in short sleeves. And missing were the clusters of children that would normally form then quickly break up as they hustled to beat the bell.
Instead individual students would stop at a desk or open a car window as Isaac Dickson Elementary staff approached each one with a thermometer and clipboard, asking if they had been sick and making sure masks were on before anyone got out of a car or approached the school entrance. ....
