Last winter, health experts worried about COVID-19 variants spreading quickly across the state, further overwhelming already crammed intensive care units. While health officials remain concerned about the potential for a wider outbreak fueled by more contagious variants, new case averages, hospitalizations and deaths are still trending down in Texas as the number of people fully vaccinated statewide has passed 25%.
Nationwide, the average weekly number of new COVID-19 cases has dropped in more than half of states as 29% of Americans are now fully vaccinated. ....

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released an
interim report last week pertaining to the efficacy of vaccines distributed to healthcare personnel and frontline workers since the initial rollout in December.
The report revealed the efficacy rate of the first dose of both the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines was 80 percent effective against coronavirus infections two weeks after being administered.
The second dose of the vaccines had a 90 percent efficacy rate, confirming the mRNA vaccines are effective against coronavirus infections in real-world conditions. ....

Recently, those eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine has expanded and its availability has increased. Dr. Bhavna Lall, an internal medicine physician and faculty in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Houston College of Medicine says it is important to obtain the vaccine when available to you and continue to wear masks.
“There are now three vaccines authorized for emergency use. The FDA and the CDC have declared the Pfizer, Moderna, and the Johnson and Johnson vaccines as being safe and effective. They all prevent hospitalizations and deaths from the virus. In addition, there is evidence these vaccines may help decrease asymptomatic transmission. You can take any of the authorized COVID-19 vaccinations offered to you in the U.S.” ....
