Grant will provide more library books at Agnes Little

Grant provides new books for Agnes Little library
Jennifer Sweet, Agnes Little Elementary School librarian, has received a $5,000 grant from the Laura Bush foundation to purchase new books for the school library.
Sweet said she was in disbelief when she learned she received the grant. Normally she only has money she makes from the Scholastic Book Fair to buy books and supplies for the library, she said, and since the fair was canceled last fall, this grant will allow her to purchase a lot of new books.
“The average age of the books in our library is 20 years old,” she said. “I am looking to use this grant money to update our fiction and nonfiction sections so I can better accommodate the students and teachers with beneficial resources they need in addition to what they use in the classroom.” ....

Officials find cuts within budget, give a nod to slimmed plan

Confusion over school cut
PAWTUCKET – A cut from a near-maximum 3.74 percent tax increase to 2.5 percent increase is “more palatable” to city taxpayers after multiple financial hits, said Councilor Mark Wildenhain, head of the council’s finance subcommittee.
Working with Mayor Donald Grebien’s administration, he said the council was able to find the cuts needed to lessen the burden, though there are still some unknown variables going forward.
The overall decrease in expenditures given initial approval by the council’s finance subcommittee and committee of the whole at its May 19 meeting is $1,191,284, including $421,884 in fire overtime and $734,400 in lower operating expenses, including $499,900 in funding to the schools, $200,000 in passive parks school chargebacks, $20,000 in sewer bills, $14,500 in audit fees, and a decrease in capital expenses for police communication equipment of $35,000. ....

Citing consistent delays, Pawtucket seeks new bus contract minus Davies

PAWTUCKET – While sharing buses with the William M. Davies Career and Technical High School seemed like a good idea on paper, Pawtucket families and officials have grown frustrated with the delays it has caused students both before and after school.
“We aren’t doing a good service to our families in Pawtucket,” Erin Dube, deputy chairwoman of the Pawtucket School Committee, said at the March 25 meeting. “They want buses on time for their families.”
To remedy the situation, school board members voted 6-0 to go out to bid for a new transportation contract without including Lincoln-based Davies. Member Joanne Bonollo was absent from the meeting. ....
