Growing up in Hāwera in the 1950s offered Philip Holmes paltry cultural experiences. But it also was a source of inspiration for his lengthy, prolific and successful professional art career. From the age of 6, he knew he wanted to be an artist and he drew constantly. He would search for paintings, drawings and sculptures in his home town.
A convicted criminal who has lived in Australia since he was nine years old has lost his bid to remain in the country and will instead be deported back to New Zealand after he was jailed for three years for drug possession.
Jamie Perfect appealed a decision to cancel his Australian visa on character grounds, arguing being deported to New Zealand would be a nightmare and he would most likely never see (his) mum and sister again .
The 29-year-old was convicted in the Queensland Supreme Court of possessing an illicit drug in December 2017 and sent to prison, where eight months later a decision was made to cancel his visa because he was jailed for more than 12 months.

The Northern Stars have made a huge statement to open the ANZ Premiership season, beating the two-time defending champion Central Pulse 57-53 in Palmerston North.
It was an impressive showing for the Stars, who led the game from start to finish and looked in control throughout, despite the Pulse closing the gap in the final quarter.
Veteran defender Anna Harrison immediately showed why the Stars wanted her in the team this year, with her presence in the circle flustering the Pulse attack as she tipped and picked off passes.

Napier s Luke Glover is off to Palmerston North after succeeding in the Hawke s Bay round of the Raw Comedy Quest on Sunday.
There was a good turnout for the event at The Cabana in Napier, where James Fulton-Cameron of Palmerston North also qualified for the Palmerston North round of the Quest.
