Corrections commissioner on COVID exposure inside Minnesota's prisons


At least eight inmates have died this year after contracting COVID-19 in Minnesota s prisons, and more than 4,000 have been infected with the virus including corrections staff. 
Since March, most of Minnesota s facilities have remained on semi-permanent lockdown. Inmate movements have been restricted, educational programming has been disrupted and in-person visitation has been suspended to stop the spread of the virus. 
And these measures are also taking a toll on family and friends who are not able to regularly see their loved ones. 
Minnesota Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell and MPR News reporter Kirsti Marohn joined host Angela Davis to talk about what is being done to protect the state’s inmates and where they are in line for the vaccine. ....

ST PAUL, Dec 16 The US state of Minnesota yesterday released a Black man who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002 after he was convicted of the murder of an 11-year old girl, officials said.
The Minnesota Pardons Board commuted Myon Burrell s sentence to 20 years from life plus 12 months, and said he will serve the remainder of his sentence on a supervised release, according to an internal memo from Commissioner Paul Schnell of the Minnesota Department of Corrections to various officials. ....

Myon Burrell stepped outside of the Stillwater prison a free man Tuesday after spending 18 years behind bars for a crime he says he never committed, rousing dozens of supporters in the frigid evening into cheers and applause.
Cloaked from head-to-toe in a traditional Islamic thobe garment colored all white to signify rebirth, Burrell raised his right fist in the air as he stood on the prison s front steps.
Myon s free! Myon s free! the crowd cheered about 6:45 p.m. while drum beats filled the air.
The Minnesota Board of Pardons voted Tuesday afternoon to immediately release Burrell from a life prison sentence in the 2002 fatal shooting of 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards, who was killed when a stray bullet penetrated her Minneapolis home. ....

MCF-Faribault has Half of Prison COVID Deaths
The Minnesota Department of Corrections reported today two more deaths from COVID-19 for incarcerated people in the state s prison system.  In a news release it s stated on December 10, 2020 a 66 year old man incarcerated at MCF-Faribault and a 63 year old man incarcerated at MCF-Moose Lake died at Abbot Northwester Hospital in Minneapolis.  Both had recently been diagnosed wityh COVID-19.
The identities of the men are being withheld pending full notification of relatives.
The Department of Health has a policy of revealing no identities of COVID-19 patients, living or deceased.
In the news release Commissioner Paul Schnell is quoted, This has been a difficult day for the Department of Corrections.  We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of these men.  We continue to do everything in our power to mitigate and contain the spread of COVID in our facilities. ....
