Minister for Health enables secure access to COVID-19 Data Research Hub
 
Today, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly TD, has launched an initiative to facilitate safe and secure access to COVID-19 data for valid health research purposes.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has been maintaining a COVID-19 Data Research Hub since April 2020. To date this data has been used solely by a sub-group of the National Public Health Emergency Team to conduct statistical analysis on healthcare data.
Now, in partnership with the CSO and the Health Research Board (HRB), an application process has been put in place to enable registered researchers to apply to access the data for research purposes. A series of safeguards have been put in place to protect patient privacy under stringent and transparent rules while advancing our understanding of COVID-19 for the benefit of people’s health, patient care as well as health care policy and planning. Registered researchers will be able to apply for access to Ireland’s Covid-19 data research hub.
Since April 2020, Ireland’s Central Statistics Office (CSO) has been maintaining a Covid-19 data research hub.
This data has been solely used by a sub-group of the National Public Health Emergency Team to conduct statistical analysis on healthcare data.

Don't jump on capital punishment bandwagon too quickly

In response to Mr. Mullen s advocacy of the death penalty, a couple of things must be remembered before jumping on this bandwagon.
First, since 1973, there have been over 140 innocent death row inmates exonerated and freed in the U.S. One has to wonder how many of the 1,400 inmates executed in the US over the past four decades were actually innocent.
In Canada, one has only to look at David Milgard, Thomas Sophonow, and Guy Paul Morin, to name but a few, that would have been wrongly executed if Canada had the death penalty.
While names like Pickton and Olson are freely used by death penalty advocates, do we want the collateral damage of our quest for revenge to be the execution of innocent Canadians? I think not. ....
