Church models and miniature Good Friday statues in virtual exhibition on social media
A virtual exhibition is showcasing the ubiquitous local fascination with church models and religious statues. Set up by the Għaqda Dilettanti Mudelli ta’ Knejjes, the Facebook page Wirja Virtwali features several photos of church models, Good Friday statues and other church-related material, alongside interviews with amateur scale modellers.
“There are several enthusiasts around the country and most people are not aware of the marvellous works they have. It is a hobby that is religious, devotional and traditional. It is part of Maltese culture,” says Raoul Briffa, who is curating the Facebook page as part of a Master’s degree in community action and development within the Faculty for Social Wellbeing, University of Malta. ....

Owner wins back seized fishing vessel


A fishing operator cleared of fuel smuggling has successfully challenged the seizure of his fishing vessel by customs authorities before the court of appeal, which also suggested amending the current legal scenario. 
Paul Piscopo, owner of the trawler MFV Alexandra I, together with his wife Alexandra, had filed an application before the civil courts requesting the release of their vessel seized by customs in 2009.
The vessel had been purchased from Egypt, setting sail for Malta with 25,000 litres of diesel on board.
Yet, after reaching home port with some 17,000 litres of fuel, its owners realised the boat needed maintenance and repair works, including welding in the engine room. ....

Small-scale fishers who obtained their first ever tuna quota in 2019 have balked at the prospect of having to apply once again for the licence, due to the extensive investment carried out on their vessels. But other fishers say the renewable two-year licence allows a renewal of the industry by allowing in new players
