It s a massive social benefit - Extension to scheme to help tackle empty homes Carlisle City Council is continuing its efforts to tackle the issue of empty homes in the area, as figures show the number of empty properties in Carlisle is double the national average. More than 1,000 homes across the Carlisle area are currently empty, equating to two per cent of homes in the district. In late 2019, Carlisle City Council launched a grant initiative designed to support property owners return long-term empty homes to a habitable state. Yesterday, the council s executive agreed to extend the scheme, and to raise the maximum amount available from £3,000 to £5,000. ....
Carlisle and Workington are set to receive more than £40m in Government funding, it has been confirmed. It was announced yesterday that Carlisle and Workington were two of the 45 towns and small cities set to benefit from the latest round of funding from the Government s £3.6bn Towns Fund investment pot. The news came as part of the Chancellor s 2021 budget announcements, which set out the Government s tax and spend plans for the coming year. Yesterday s announcement that Carlisle was to receive £19.7m of Towns Fund investment comes just a few months after the news the city will receive more than £9.1m in Future High Streets Fund investment - another Government funding programme intended to help encourage economic growth in towns and cities across the country. ....
POLITICIANS have welcomed the chancellor’s budget announcement to accelerate the A66 Trans-Pennine upgrade. In his speech yesterday, Conservative Rishi Sunak announced £135m for the development of the scheme with an eye to starting construction on the road in 2024. It’s also looking at halving the completion time from 10 to five years. According to Highways England, the scheme involves improving the A66 between the M6 at Penrith and A1 at Scotch Corner. The project will involve turning single-carriageway sections into dual carriageway, plus making improvements to the junctions along the route. John Stevenson, Carlisle’s Conservative MP , said: “It is long overdue but it’s extremely welcome and I’m delighted that the Government’s made this announcement. ....
