Expanded digital edition of 'State Songs' from They Might Be Giants' John Linnell out today

Craft Recordings announces an expanded, digital edition of John Linnell’s acclaimed cult favorite, State Songs. Out today across all major platforms, this special reissue includes the rarity “Louisiana,” available digitally for the very first time. The jovial track was initially released as a B-side on the 1999 vinyl single of “Montana” a collectible die-cut record in the shape of the USA. As one half of  They Might Be Giants, Linnell has long been known for his surreal lyricism and absurdist alt-rock. The singer-songwriter brought both of these qualities plus a myriad of melodic styles to his solo debut, State Songs. First released in 1994 as a five-song EP, Linnell expanded the collection five years later, turning it into a high-spirited, 16-track tour across America.

Alex Merto on his less is more approach to book cover design

Alex Merto on his less is more approach to book cover design Having designed book covers for around ten years, Merto says his process is driven fully by the book rather than his own personal style 11/03/2021 8:32 am New York-based designer Alex Merto says he got into graphic design by accident. Deeming himself a failed student in high school without a “clear path to anywhere”, he spent a lot of time making music in various bands and designing album art along the way. He eventually moved from California to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts.  “I think the first piece of graphic design that I really noticed and impacted me was a book designed by Peter Buchanan-Smith for the band Wilco,” Merto tells CR. “It was the first time I noticed that a book could really be art. I was lucky enough to end up studying with Peter while I was in school, as well as Paul Sahre who has also always been a huge inspiration to me.”
