Coronavirus pandemic impacts lettuce industry as farmworkers brace for busy season

Lettuce farmers in southwestern Arizona are feeling the impacts of COVID-19. Their sales took a big hit last year so they’re planting less this season. With the U.S.-Mexico border still closed, getting enough migrant workers has also been a challenge. To try and keep workers safe, farmers have added new safety measures like masks and social distancing, hoping they won t see an outbreak.
YUMA, ARIZ. – Farmers across Southwestern Arizona are hard at work harvesting much of the country’s lettuce supply during their busiest time of the year.
Yuma County has the ideal growing conditions, with cool nights and warm days. From November to April, they supply about 90% of the United States and Canada s supply of romaine and iceberg lettuces about 2 billion servings. However, this year the coronavirus pandemic is taking its toll on the industry and changing the way farmers do things. ....

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - 2020 was a wild year for everyone, but the ag industry has learned how to adapt to the card they were dealt.
As we look back on the ag industry in the year 2020, the shift in demand seemed to be the biggest contributor to economic losses.
David Nickerson, operations manager with Robert Nickerson Farms says they faced some difficulties in the spring and summer when many of the restaurants were closed.
We, personally, grow a lot on the food service side, so when schools and cafeterias start shutting down, that does really impact the demand, Nickerson said. ....

The majority of stores along the Morley Avenue shopping district in downtown Nogales remain shut down because of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The stores would normally be packed with holiday shoppers this time of the year.
NOGALES, Arizona On any given day in December, crowds of shoppers usually would dart in and out of stores advertising holiday shopping deals along Morley Avenue, the downtown business district here.
This year, the area resembles a ghost town, with empty store fronts, locked doors and few shoppers in sight. ....
