Managing editor Tami Roleff explains how… The Hi-Desert Nature Museum is offering free monthly Discovery Kits for children in second grade and above through July. In May, the kits are dedicated to the study of fossils. In this kit, children will find real fossils for research, a dinosaur skeleton puzzle, an amber craft project, and access to an online portal with many more activities to do from home. Reserve your child’s Discovery Kit by visiting the Hi-Desert Nature Museum’s website, www.hidesertnaturemuseum.org. Supplies are limited. As the county enters the red tier, more of our favorite spaces are opening back up to the public. Reporter Joshua King has details on the re-opening of the Hi-Desert Nature Museum… The Hi-Desert Nature Museum will reopen to the public on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 by appointment. Reservations for museum visits are available for Wednesdays through Saturdays and can be scheduled online at the museum’s website. Each visit is limited to 45 minutes with up to 10 members of the same household able to attend. Allen Utley, formerly of Indio, says this is how he remembers the Salton Sea. The museum will reopen with “Salton Sea Stories,” an exhibition where visitors can experience the heyday of the Salton Sea. The exhibition presents the photography of vaudeville performer George Mann, taken in 1962, and highlights the story of Helen Burns, “Queen of the Salton Sea.” The museum wi ....
A new exhibition of quilts will go online on the Hi-Desert Nature Museum’s website. Managing editor Tami Roleff has more information about the show called “Stitching California”… “Stitching California” displays quilts from more than 40 artists who pay tribute to iconic California views and native flora. But other themes also emerge: the impacts of drought, flood, and fire; the effects of the Gold Rush, and persecutions faced by California’s indigenous peoples, Hispanics, and Japanese residents who were interned during World War II. The quilts also contain references to industry, economy, geography, and topography, and run the emotional gamut from hope to despair. The exhibit will be on the museum’s website, hidesertnaturemuseum.org, through April 4. ....
The Yucca Valley Town Council met last night to discuss the allocation of the Community Development Block Grant among other matters. Reporter Joshua King has more details… The meeting began with the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding that the Yucca Valley Senior Center or Community Center will be used as space for vaccination in the future. Following, the council discussed the Community Development Block Grant and the allocation of its funds. Both the Library Literacy Program and Senior Nutrition Program have requested $10,000 each from the CDBG, but the funds will be allocated towards Tri-Valley Little League improvements instead. The Recreation Department reported on the success of its online holiday events in the COVID era. The Hi-Desert Nature Museum has seen successes as well, with Zoom lectures that have hosted 40 to 80 participants on average. ....
