Biden's climate policies: Adrift in economic and scientific fantasyland

In his groundbreaking 2011 book, “Civilization,” Harvard scholar Niall Ferguson memorably observed that “Western elites are beset by almost millenarian fears of a coming environmental apocalypse.” These fears were prominently on display at the recent climate summit for world leaders hosted by President Biden
Few specifics on costs were put forth at the summit, save the obvious fact that the greatest burdens would fall upon the U.S. economy. Also not on the agenda was any discussion of the March report of the International Renewable Energy Agency, which bluntly stated that $131 trillion would have to be spent on clean technologies by 2050 in order to meet current climate goals. Rather oddly,White House climate czar John Kerry ....

Food system emissions need attention at Biden's climate summit

Recent studies estimate that the food system contributes about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. For perspective, this represents more global greenhouse gas emissions than from the combustion of any individual fossil fuel, including coal. The figures are substantial even at a country level. In the United States, for example, food system emissions constitute about 25 percent of total national global greenhouse gas emissions. In Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, the food system generates over 70 percent  of total emissions. In China, the share of global greenhouse gas emissions attributable to its food system is smaller (less than 20 percent), but these emissions are larger in absolute terms than for any other country and constitute nearly 5 percent of global emissions. ....

Move over, Big Oil, and make some room for Big Meat at the climate shame table. A new study shows agribusiness is a major source climate misinformation as well as carbon emissions.

The analysis, published last month in Climatic Change, looks at the PR moves behind some of the world’s largest producers of meat and dairy, comparing them to their emissions. Most shockingly, the analysis finds that all 10 of the top agriculture companies in the U.S. have contributed to efforts to downplay how agribusiness is linked to climate change. ....

Leaked Big Oil Docs Hint at Support for a Carbon Tax

The American Petroleum Institute is planning to endorse a carbon tax but has no plans to stop funding climate-denying candidates or stop representing Big Oil.

The #resistance is growing. The American Petroleum Institute, which is the nation’s largest lobbying group for the oil and gas industry, is planning to endorse levying a price on carbon pollution, according to documents obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

The announcement comes as the oil industry faces the prospect of tighter regulations with the Biden administration and Democratic control of both houses of Congress. While it’s tempting to look at API’s planned endorsement of a carbon tax as a sign the industry is getting serious about climate change, following the money tells a much different story about what API’s legislative priorities are. ....
