5 Feb 2021 Italian president Sergio Mattarella has called on former European Central bank (ECB) president Mario Draghi to form a new technocrat government following the resignation of Giuseppe Conte rather than call fresh elections. Mr Draghi accepted the offer to form a government on Wednesday after a meeting with the Italian president and will begin talks with various political parties in the parliament to secure the majority needed to properly govern the country. ROME (AP) Italy’s president has asked former European bank chief Mario Draghi to form a non-political government to steer Italy through the coronavirus pandemic after last-ditch negotiations among political parties failed. Draghi met with President Sergio Mattarella for just over an hour on Wednesday, and a Mattarella official told reporters that the president had given Draghi a mandate to form a government.
