Whoop-Up Days plans announced: No parade, fair moved to September

The sights, sounds, tastes and smells of Whoop-Up Days will be returning to Lethbridge this year although the fair will be held about 10 days later, and will be a bit smaller than usual.
Exhibition Park announced the fair will be held from Sept. 2-5. It will include Wild Rose Shows midway, music, beer gardens, food vendors, marketplace and horse racing.
It will also include free admission and free parking, although that will substantially reduced due to on-going construction of the new Agri-food Hub and Trade Centre.
“This event as a community celebration has never been more important,” said Mike Warkentin, Lethbridge & District Exhibition CEO. “The history of this event is as old as this community. ....

Whoop-Up Days are back!
After COVID took the fun out of last summer with the cancellation of regular Whoop-Up Days programming, Lethbridge’s annual fair is returning to Exhibition Park in September.
Mike Warkentin, Chief Executive Officer of the Lethbridge & District Exhibition, said Friday Whoop-Up Days will be staged from Sept. 2-5 at the Exhibition grounds.
Due to the financial impact COVID had on people, admission to the fair will be free, he told media. ....

Rocky Mountain Turf Club forced to postpone opening weekend races at last minute

Less than 24 hours before the horse races were set to get underway, the Rocky Mountain Turf Club found out they d have to wait another week.
They received an email early Friday afternoon from Horse Race Alberta, the governing body for all race tracks in the province, stating that all jockeys and gatekeepers needed to receive a negative polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, test result before they raced, which could take up to 72 hours.
Because of this, they were forced to postpone their opening weekend until May 22nd.
Horse Race Alberta notified them that they d received an exemption from AHS on May 7th as long as they followed the specific guidelines laid out, which included a two week quarantine for the jockeys along with other guidelines such as wearing masks and social distancing. ....

The horses are back at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club, but for now the fans won’t be.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the RMTC grandstand will be vacant, but the same race-day vibe will be intact as the horses take the gate starting this weekend. ....
