Garcetti aide tapped to serve as L.A.'s top budget official

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has tapped a high-level aide to serve as the city’s top budget official, a post that will be critical as the city grapples with both an intractable homelessness crisis and a lawsuit demanding dramatic action to address it.
Garcetti on Wednesday nominated Deputy Chief of Staff Matt Szabo to be city administrative officer, replacing Rich Llewellyn, a longtime Garcetti advisor who is retiring. Szabo’s nomination requires City Council approval.
Szabo, a City Hall veteran and the mayor’s point person on the budget, has been working to sell council members on Garcetti’s latest spending plan, which calls for restoring services cut during the COVID-19 pandemic, replenishing the city’s emergency reserves and implementing new initiatives aimed at addressing racial and economic inequality. ....

Memo to Mike Feuer: If You Want to Be Mayor, How About Settling the Skid Row NC Formation Committees Lawsuit?

EASTSIDER-If you really think about it, the Skid Row Neighborhood Council Formation Committee’s election in 2017 is actually a story about massive election fraud in Los Angeles.
It just happened in a Subdivision Election for Neighborhood Councils, instead of a regular election for our elected officials. I don’t know why this is OK for the Neighborhood Council system, when it is patently illegal for regular City Elections.
My thought is that if Mike Feuer wants to have any legitimacy at all in the race for Mayor in 2022, he should fix the fix on Skid Row’s election, which is still tied up in a hostile court fight. ....

In November, I wrote that he should pick a Latino from the San Fernando Valley to replace Kamala Harris as a California U.S. senator.
The governor got the location and ethnicity right, but not my guy: I suggested Hollywood macho man Danny Trejo, aka “Machete,” but Newsom went with Secretary of State Alex Padilla.

He’s the first-ever California U.S. senator born in Los Angeles. The son of Mexican immigrants. Grew up working-class in the suburbs. Graduated from MIT, which already makes him smarter than nearly all of his new colleagues combined. ....
