Columbus begins effort to reduce traffic deaths in city


Having zero traffic-related deaths or serious injuries in a major city is a lofty goal, but Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said Tuesday he believes it is a goal worth striving for in Columbus. 
Standing in a parking lot at the intersection of James Road and East Livingston Avenue Tuesday morning, Ginther said the city s Vision Zero Initiative will use data to identify the areas of Columbus and neighboring communities with the highest likelihood of traffic fatalities and work to resolve issues that could lead to serious crashes. 
Among those changes are lowered speed limits in some areas, redesigning streets with all traffic  including pedestrians and cyclists  in mind, and working with the city s suburban neighbors to address the problem. ....

Ann Arbor City Council approves sidewalk snow removal study

ANN ARBOR, MI At its March 1 virtual meeting, Ann Arbor City Council approved a resolution to improve winter sidewalk maintenance by assessing the feasibility for a municipal sidewalk snow removal program.
The proposal directs the city to take the lead on sidewalk maintenance solutions, mainly along a major transit corridors and throughout downtown during the winter of 2021-2022.
Officials will conduct a season-long study next winter to observe which neighborhoods need city involvement the most and report findings back to City Council for further considerations.
Council voted 9-2 on the resolution with Council Members Ali Ramlawi, D-5th Ward, and Jeff Hayner, D-1st Ward, dissenting. ....

Officials to share road safety lessons | News, Sports, Jobs

Transportation and public works officials from Hawaii County and Oregon will share road safety lessons from their own communities during a virtual town hall for Maui residents on Thursday.
The Vision Zero Virtual Town Hall, hosted by the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization, will take place at 4 p.m. via Zoom with a focus on reducing traffic fatalities to zero.
Matt Rodrigues, public works director from Eugene, Ore., will share key lessons from the city’s Vision Zero Initiative, while Natasha Soriano, transportation planner from Hawaii County, will also share takeaways from the island’s Vision Zero Action Plan.
The event will also feature remarks from U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, Gov. David Ige and Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino. ....
