Kusama: Cosmic Nature | Apollo Magazine

Many museums remain closed, but at least spring has sprung. This week’s Apollo Art Diary picks out four arty gardens to enjoy…
Yayoi Kusama’s artistic work owes much to her engagement with the natural world; as a child she would spend hours among the fields of her family’s seed nursery in Matsumoto. In this display at New York Botanical Garden (until 31 October), early works such as her
Narcissus Garden (1966) are installed amid the flowers; there are also two new monumental sculptures,
Dancing Pumpkin and
I Want to Fly to the Universe, and her hallucinatory ‘obliteration greenhouse’,
Flower Obsession (2017). It’s also a great opportunity, were any needed, to take a look at the NYBG’s famous rose garden, the native plant garden, and its Victorian-style greenhouses. Find out more from the NYBG’s website. ....

Gardens at Waddesdon Manor | Apollo Magazine

Museums in many countries remain closed, but at least spring has sprung. This week’s Apollo Art Diary picks out four arty gardens to enjoy…
In 1874 Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild took what was a bare hilltop, outside his manor at Waddesdon in Buckinghamshire, and with the help of landscape architect Elie Lainé created what remains one of the most sumptuous examples of Victorian horticulture in the country. Today it is renowned for the colourful, annually changing designs of the carpet beds on the parterre, its elaborate ribbon bedsits, and its aviary, home to rare birds including the Bali, or Rothschild’s mynah (the 2nd Baron, Walter, was a keen ornithologist). The art-filled house itself is shut for now, but the gardens are also dotted with artworks, ranging from 18th-century marble fountain sculptures, originally from the palaces of the Dukes of Parma, to contemporary pieces. And April is a good time to see tulips, daffodils, wallflowers and narcissus. Find out mo ....

Yayoi Kusama: A Retrospective | Apollo Magazine

While some museums are closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibitions will include shows at institutions that are currently open as well as digital projects providing virtual access to art and culture.
A close collaboration with the artist, this ambitious survey at the Gropius Bau in Berlin (23 April–15 August) allows visitors to lose themselves in full reconstructions of eight of Kusama’s exhibitions from between 1952 and 1983, revealing how her art developed from early abstract paintings to her celebrated immersive environments. Included are two of Kusama’s earliest exhibitions, held in her hometown of Matsumoto, followed by the installation ‘Aggregation: One Thousand Boats Show’, which was staged in New York in 1963. The survey also includes a new Infinity Room and an installation specially commissioned for the atrium of the museum. Find out more from the Gropius Bau’s website. ....

Harlow Sculpture Town | Apollo Magazine

This week’s Apollo Art Diary picks out four outdoor sculpture trails and exhibitions that you can still enjoy while the long wait continues for UK museums to reopen…
The Essex new town of Harlow, which has just under 90,000 inhabitants, might seem an unlikely locale for one of the finest public sculpture collections in the country – but with its more than 100 works by the likes of Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin, it is hard to dispute the council’s claim that this is ‘the world’s first Sculpture Town’. The Harlow Art Trust was set up in 1953 to purchase and commission works for the town, built in the wake of the war to rehouse Londoners who lost their homes in the Blitz; in the early years, it provided important early commissions for recently graduated artists such as Ralph Brown, and the town continues to provide opportunities for young sculptors through its residency programme. Last year, the town launched an interactive online map, with photogr ....
