Man who rescued 669 Czech children from Nazis is now the hero of a kids' book

When Vera, a young Jewish girl, was growing up outside of Prague in 1938, she had little on her mind besides her grandmother and love of animals. But her blissful childhood would change forever with the emerging crisis brought about by her country’s neighbor, Nazi Germany.
When Vera’s parents learned about an opportunity for Jewish children to escape to the United Kingdom organized by an Englishman named Nicholas Winton, they sent their 9-year-old daughter on a train out. Ultimately, 669 Jewish children were saved by the series of transports out of Czechoslovakia. ....

"His story is a how-to manual": New Winton website launched | Radio Prague International


A freshly launched website celebrates the legacy of Sir Nicholas Winton, who in 1939 saved 669 mainly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia by helping them get to his native UK. The site showcases a wealth of material from the Sir Nicholas Winton Memorial Trust – and of course introduces visitors to his inspirational story. I discussed the website with his daughter, Barbara Winton.
“The motivation really was that my family – my husband, two children and I – put together a trust to hold my father’s archives.
“My father’s archives are quite extensive. They include original documentation, copies of the original stuff that’s now in Yad Vasham, all his awards, photographs, audio-visual stuff – so a lot of material. ....

People across the South and South East have been remembering the victims of the Holocaust on Holocaust Memorial day.
What is Holocaust Memorial Day?
Holocaust Memorial Day takes place every year on 27th January, which is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
The day remembers all those impacted by the atrocity during the Second World War, as well as the genocides in Bosnia, Rwanda, Cambodia and Darfur. 
It encourages people to think of those who tragically lost their lives, and to honour the survivors. ....
