Athens has lost a treasure in Charles Burch Sr , who died last Sunday

The call came in on a Sunday afternoon. I let the machine get it. When I got around to listening, I discovered a long, rambling message from someone affiliated with the Athens YMCA. The person on the recording went on and on, so it seemed to me, about a person who had worked at the Y for a long time and was something of a local hero in Athens. The crux of the matter was that there was a committee and the committee wanted a book written about this hero and they wanted me to be involved. I didn’t return the call. I was up to my neck in alligators and had a couple of projects of my own going. I had three children in college and was teaching school full time and writing a syndicated newspaper column three times a week. My plate was full, understand, so I just didn’t return the call.

11th annual Jimmie Dyess Symposium to honor three for civic service

Editor s note: An earlier version of this story included incorrect venue information and did not make clear the Jimmie Dyess Symposium is an online-only event. The Chronicle regrets the error. The 11th annual Jimmie Dyess Symposium begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, but instead of drawing it s usual crowd at the Augusta Museum of History, this year s celebration will be a virtual one, available on the museum s website, Facebook page and YouTube channel. Honorees will be Doug Hastings, Terry Elam and Medal of Honor recipient Mike Rose. Those honored at the annual symposium receive the Distinguished American Award. Museum Executive Director Nancy Glaser said the virtual celebration will include interviews with each honoree, which were filmed separately with retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Perry Smith, who assists in organizing the event and acts as the master of ceremonies.
