Senator Rudy Grant is defending Government’s decision to salute frontline workers helping to manage Barbados’ COVID-19 fight.
Making his contribution to the
Barbados Humanitarian Service Award Bill 2020, which was passed in the Senate today, Grant said the frontline workers who continue to perform throughout the pandemic are deserving of being recognised for their hard work and dedication.
As a result, Grant said he fully supported the legislation designed to honour supermarket employees, security guards, hotel workers, and medical teams, for their contribution to efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

Awards don't bring jobs - Franklyn - Barbados Today

Opposition Senator Caswell Franklyn believes there is no need to introduce a new law to award Barbados’ frontline COVID-19 workers and that a planned one-time payment for the awardees is insufficient as they should be compensated all the time.
Making clear in the Senate Friday that he has no objection to these persons being recognised, he questioned the reason for rushing through the
Barbados Humanitarian Service Award Bill and
Gold Award of Achievement (Amendment) Bill so awards could be presented in January.
The proposed new bill and amended legislation are intended to give recognition to Barbadians and some non-nationals from all walks of life for their efforts during the pandemic and also to facilitate a one-time financial grant for their tireless and brave work in the frontline of the battle against COVID-19. ....

Barbadians were Friday urged not to let their guard down in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic as its economic fallout leaves many jobless and struggling to make ends meet.
Speaking in the Senate on the
Barbados Humanitarian Service Award Bill, Senator Reverend Dr John Rogers said he detected a note of celebration among fellow senators on the national accomplishments in effectively managing the pandemic thus far.

Browne calls for education on COVID-19 vaccines

Barbadians should take COVID-19 vaccines seriously, but Government also has to do extensive public education, says St Philip North MP Dr Sonia Browne.
The medical practitioner called for public education on the issue, and also urged colleagues in the House of Assembly to lead by example in showing the public that the pandemic was not over.

She was speaking on Tuesday during debate on the Barbados Humanitarian Service Award Bill, 2020, which will see front line workers being awarded for their work during the crisis.
Browne, who is Chairman of Committees, said: “It’s okay to tell the Barbadian public to ‘take the vaccine’; ‘don’t mind the rumours; ‘it’s for your own good’, but we have to spend a lot of time on education. ....

PM bids to reward COVID-19 frontline workers

Barbadians from all walks of life along with some non-nationals will next month receive national awards plus a one-time financial grant as a reward for bravery on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Mia Mottley disclosed on Tuesday.
Acknowledging the fight against the disease is far from over, Mottley told fellow legislators that many went above and beyond the call to duty and that it is Government’s judgement that rather than wait for a special occasion like Heroes’ Day, these workers need “the extra wind in your sail”.
In tabling two pieces of legislation, the
