Some vendors of BARVEN (Barbados Association of Vendors, Retailers and Entrepreneurs) remain adamant that they will not be moving from the temporary market in Cheapside, The City.
Following the removal of vendors last week after a fence was erected in the Cheapside Terminal where many had since taken up plying their trade along the pavement, a meeting was held and the vendors decided they would be returning “home” this weekend. ....

Some vendors who ply their trade near the Cheapside van stand, The City, are at loggerheads with the president of the Barbados Association of Vendors, Retailers and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN), Alister Alexander, over the fencing in of their usual spot at Cheapside, St Michael.
“We knew from last week that the area was fenced ’round, so as early as 5:15 a.m. today [yesterday] we came and set up in the old BARVEN market (next door to Shop Smart) since we didn’t have anywhere else to go and sell,” one vendor said. ....

KINGSTOWN – Farmers in St Vincent’s breadbasket region are counting thousands of dollars in losses after the decimation of their crops from the erupting La Soufriere volcano’s ashfall. The fallout could trigger food shortages and price hikes in Barbados, some market watchers said Friday.
In the villages of the island’s southern farming heartland, Mesopotamia Valley, life is once again springing forth from the earth. But for hundreds of root crops, bananas and other vegetables, it’s much too late.
Some growers hope and pray that with a reliable water supply slowly returning, they can revive their crops in time for export to Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and elsewhere in CARICOM. ....
