The University of California at San Francisco announced Wednesday that it s bringing together a group of scientists and clinicians with expertise on aging to launch the Bakar Aging Research Institute.
The new institute will be located at UCSF s Parnassus Heights campus and will be headed by stem cell scientist Leanne Jones.
Some of the goals of the BARI include looking into the causes of age-related diseases like cancer, neurodegeneration and cardiovascular disease; developing new technologies and therapies to slow or reverse the aging process; and establishing better health care practices for older adults. ....

Science of Aging is Focus of New Bakar Research Institute


Leanne Jones, PhD, will join UCSF from UCLA to lead the new Bakar Aging Research Institute.
UC San Francisco is launching the Bakar Aging Research Institute (BARI), a scientific community that aims to translate breakthroughs in aging research across many disciplines into new approaches and treatments that help people remain healthy and vibrant in later life. 
The new Institute will bring together scientists and clinicians from all UCSF sites to address the most critical questions related to the science of aging. BARI members will be drawn from the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, the UCSF Hillblom Center for the Biology of Aging, the Department of Medicine’s Division of Geriatrics, and the UCSF Institute for Health and Aging, as well as many individual departments.  ....

UCSF Health Leader Mark Laret to Retire at Year's End

Mark R. Laret, president and chief executive officer of UCSF Health, who grew and transformed UC San Francisco’s multibillion-dollar clinical enterprise in an ever-shifting health care landscape for more than two decades, has announced that he will retire from the University of California on Dec. 31, 2021.
A nationally recognized leader in health care, Laret joined UCSF in 2000, in the wake of a three-year merger with Stanford Hospital that had left UCSF Medical Center in challenging financial and administrative straits. Under Laret’s deft leadership, a new Medical Center executive team was recruited, guided by a values system he implemented called PRIDE (Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence), which has since been adopted across the entire University.  ....

The city of San Francisco and its health care providers announced a goal Wednesday to vaccinate all residents by the start of summer.
