Trade union and labour leaders on Friday demanded of the federal government to pay an unemployment allowance to all workers who had lost their jobs during the coronavirus and to universalise social security by making changes in the constitution.
Addressing a joint press conference at the Karachi Press Club, Karamat Ali from the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research, Habib-ud-Din Junaidi from the People’s Labour Bureau, Nasir Mansoor of the National Trade Union Federation, Farhat Parveen from the NOW Communities, Zahra Khan from the Home-Based Women Workers Federation, and Jannat Hussain from the Pakistan Trade Unions Defence Campaign pointed out that the workers have been hit hard due to the Covid-19 pandemic and they were not receiving any support from the government. ....

KARACHI: “Laws are made to be implemented, not to be stored inside cupboards,” said Habibuddin Junaidi, president, Peoples Labour Bureau, Sindh. He was speaking at a joint press conference on labour issues called by labour activists and trade union leaders in connection with May Day at the Karachi Press Club on Friday.
“The PPP government has passed some very fine labour-friendly laws such as the Sindh Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Sindh Home-Based Workers Act, the Sindh Covid-19 Emergency Relief Ordinance, etc, but non-implementation of these laws is [a matter of concern], especially in the private sector,” he said. ....

'Sahir Ludhianvi didn't compromise on his ideology' - Newspaper


LAHORE: Sahir Ludhianvi never compromised on his ideology despite the Indian cinema compromising with him.
This was stated by journalist Raza Rumi in a conference held in connection with the birth centenary celebrations of the famous Urdu poet and lyricist organised by the Progressive Writers Association (PWA) at the Research and Publication Centre in Lahore on Saturday.
The conference was hosted by Javed Aftab, the central secretary of the PWA.
Rumi said though Sahir wrote for films but all his songs assumed high standards of poetry and his political consciousness was apparent in his songs.
“Sahir’s film songs are neither political slogans nor parts of a speech from some rally, they are eternal part of the cinema and social consciousness of millions of fans associated with it,” he added, ....

Leaders from trade unions, labour support and human rights bodies have expressed serious concerns over increasing accidents at factories and mines in Sindh due to a lack of occupational safety and health facilities.
In a joint statement, Karamat Ali, executive director of the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler); Habib-ud-Din Junaidi of the People’s Labour Bureau; Nasir Mansoor of the National Trade Union Federation Pakistan; Liaquat Sahi from the Democratic Workers Federation, State Bank of Pakistan; Farhat Parveen of NOW Communities; Saeed Baloch of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum; Mahnaz Rahman, director, Aurat Foundation; and Asad Iqbal Butt of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan demanded of the Sindh government to ensure the safety of workers. ....
