Many parts of the city witnessed unusual heavy traffic from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as people rushed home before the night curfew that began at 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
All the shops, hotels, roadside eateries, commercial establishments and textile showrooms, both in the city and in rural areas, were closed at 9 p.m. while petrol outlets remained open. At many private offices and establishments, workers, who have to travel for over an hour to reach their houses, were allowed to start earlier. Most of the mofussil buses departed before 7 p.m. from the bus stands so that to reach the destination by 9 p.m. while town buses were operated to reach their destinations by 9.30 p.m. Since vehicle movement was high, many arterial roads and junctions witnessed traffic congestions. ....

ST certificate for Malayali tribal community a long-pending demand


‘We are fighting for three generations to get the certificate’
For 24-year-old S. Suresh of Kadambur, who works in a tea shop, his dream of pursuing his education after Plus-Two did not materialise as he was denied a ST community certificate for a mistake that he did not commit.
About 32,500 Malayali tribal community people living in Kadambur Hills in Sathyamangalam Taluk and Bargur Hills in Anthiyur Taluk were categorised under Other Caste list, while their counterparts in Dharmapuri, Pudukottai, Tiruchi, Shevaroyan Hills in Salem and Kolli Hills in Namakkal were categorised under Scheduled Tribe. Hence, they are denied reservation in educational institutions, government jobs and also welfare measures provided by the government. ....

Malayalee tribal people in many hamlets in Bargur Hills hoisted black flags atop their houses and staged a protest here on Tuesday demanding community certificates.
They said that over 1,500 families comprising 6,000 people were living in Malayanur, Thamaraikarai, Kadai Eratti, Minthangi, Kalvarai, Kovilnathan, Tholli and other hamlets for many generations. For the past 30 years we were demanding Scheduled Tribe status as we were currently under Other Caste classification. While their relatives in other districts were enjoying ST status, they continued to suffer due to lack of community certificate. Protesters said that they had submitted many petitions to officials in the past years, but they are yet to receive the certificates. ....

As many as 36 polling stations located in the hilly areas in the constituencies of Bhavani Sagar and Anthiyur have no mobile connectivity and the entire polling will be videographed.
Of the total 2,215 polling stations located at 926 locations in all the eight constituencies in the district, 118 were identified as places located in remote areas of Bargur and Talavadi where tribal people reside. A total of 16 stations in Bhavani Sagar constituency and 20 stations in Anthiyur are located in remote hilly areas that have no mobile connectivity and passing on the polling percentage on the poll day on April 6 will be a challenging task for the election officials. ....
