Combating Kansas youth suicide rates by understanding mental illness

When 14-year-old Barrett Miller shed his blond hair, flannel shirt and ripped jeans for an all-black look, many students at his rural high school took notice.  Instead of seeing a teen who was crying out for help, many saw someone who was no longer like them.  He was friendly toward others, made silly comments and mostly kept to himself; and he became a target for ridicule.  Barrett tried to put on a happy face for his family, telling jokes and drawing cartoons featuring his favorite animal, the raccoon. He spent a weekend with his grandmother, cleaning out and organizing her garage. He helped his little sister with her homework and listened to his friends problems at night.
