Wednesday, March 10, 2021 Reverse Migration: Winemaker From Iconic Napa Family Falls Under the Spell of Mendocino s Organic Old Vines, Naturally Usually, it s young, natural winemakers who go to Mendocino in search of under the radar, specialty, old vine varietals. They ll call up in the know locals, like Alex MacGregor, winemaker at Hopland s Saracina and one of the best winemakers in Mendocino with his own tiny brand Trinafour (one of my personal favorites). MacGregor s been around awhile and knows the little choice spots, including some old vine beauties that are 75 years old. Now there s another name to note who is cherishing these old Mendo vines and it s not one you would suspect. Bill Davies, son of the Napa sparkling wine royalty Davies family, who founded Schramsberg, has launched a new line of natural wines, sourcing grapes for one label from a certified organic vineyard with a name that cries out for good karma points: Buddha s Dharma. ....
I’d always thought of writing a slim volume to tell the grandchildren about my life, and bit by bit it grew into something bigger. However, Wine – A Way of Life remains a memoir, not an autobiography. For my 21st birthday, my maternal grandmother gave me membership to The Wine Society and a 12-bottle wine rack. While these presents added to my enjoyment of life, my paternal grandfather had lit the flame eight years before after a Christmas Eve dinner at the family house in Derbyshire, saying I was old enough for a glass of Port. RIP Steven Spurrier: Losing a Gentleman of the Wine World This morning the Academie du Vin Library issued a press release announcing the death of an icon in the wine world: Steven Spurrier died, earlier today. He was at home, at Bride Valley, surrounded by family. Steven was a pioneer in wine – a visionary who never lost his passion for new projects, new discoveries and the world of wine. He will always be remembered for founding the Académie du Vin, the celebrated Judgement of Paris and in recent years, the Académie du Vin Library and, together with his wife Bella, the Bride Valley Vineyard in Dorset, England – as well as much else besides. He was also a hugely loved husband, father and grandfather. He will be sorely missed, not just by his immediate family and friends, but by people right across the world of wine. His enthusiasm and love of wine will live on through Bride Valley, the Académie du Vin Library, the relaunched Académie du Vin in Canada and through th ....
How a winemaker from Russia made Californian wine world-famous Getty Images André Tchelistcheff could have been killed in the Russian Civil War, but he survived to revolutionize the American wine-making industry. On June 7, 1976, Time Magazine announced the results of the Paris Tasting: a panel of distinguished judges ruled two wines from California had surpassed their French competitors something unheard of at a time when Californian wines were generally discarded by wine lovers. Little did they know that the wine’s creator was a Russian, who came to California with the sole purpose of creating the best wines in the U.S. and in the entire world. ....
