Chancellor, four other faculty named to American Academy of Arts & Sciences | The Source

Chancellor Andrew D. Martin and four other faculty members of Washington University in St. Louis were elected members of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the academy announced April 22. The others are Deanna Barch, John Baugh, Pascal Boyer and Holden Thorp.
Founded in 1780, the academy honors exceptional scholars, leaders, artists and innovators and engages them in sharing knowledge and addressing challenges facing the world.
“I congratulate my colleagues on this significant professional achievement,” Provost Beverly Wendland said. “They are true leaders in their fields, and I am pleased and proud that their meritorious achievements have been recognized by this esteemed honor. Their scholarly work has contributed to advancing knowledge, and we’re fortunate to have such talented scholars at WashU.” ....

Supreme Court: Derek Chauvin reenergizes qualified immunity debate


The same way a reasonable police officer would never suffocate an unarmed man to death, a reasonable justice system would recognize its roots in white supremacy and end qualified immunity, tweeted Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP.
Despite skepticism from both progressive Democrats and libertarian-minded Republicans, qualified immunity has remained largely intact. Several experts said they don t expect the Chauvin trial to change the political calculation or the Supreme Court s reluctance to explore the issue broadly – at least not right away.
The nation s highest court dodged the issue last year, declining to hear a number of cases dealing with the doctrine. Those decisions came after George Floyd s death and the nationwide protests and riots that it sparked. On the other hand, the court has more recently instructed the lower courts to reconsider claims of qualified immunity in a handful of cases.   ....
