Aaron Bendich (New York Jewish Week via JTA) - Growing up, Aaron Bendich would spend lots of time with his grandfather Max in the North Bronx, in a house filled to the brim with records, videotapes and CDs. Among Max s collection were recordings of Yiddish songs and other Jewish music. Fast forward a few years and Aaron is the manager of the radio station at Vassar College and taking Yiddish classes. Inevitably he started a show featuring Yiddish music and spent his free time scouring thrift shops and used record stores for obscure Jewish recordings. ....

Recently I came across an unexpected clip from the Tonight Show from 1955 featuring a swing version of the Yiddish song, “In mayne oygn bistu sheyn” (you’re beautiful in my eyes), sung by a duo called the Burton Sisters. The recording was surprising to me for several reasons. First, it’s really good, and I’m not particularly a fan of swing music. Secondly, while the Yiddish sounds contemporary to my ear, the English lyrics haven’t aged as well. Usually, when I listen to bilingual Yiddish/English songs I have the opposite reaction, feeling that the English lyrics make the Yiddish sound dated. And finally, I wondered: who are the Burton Sisters with their elegant dresses and how did they end up performing in Yiddish on the Tonight Show at a time when it was rare to hear anything on American TV that wasn’t in English? ....
A Forverts reader has informed us that two former Ukrainian pop stars, known as The Alibi Sisters, recently performed the Yiddish song “Chiribim-Chiribom” at the blind auditions on the Ukrainian version of “The Voice.” In the video, the judges, presumably none of them Jewish, initially appear mystified by the act – some sporting a slightly mocking grin, and then, one by one, each begins swaying to the beat, hand wavering over the button, resulting in an astonishing four-chair turn. The clip has already garnered more than 950,000 views. The duet, whose real names are Anna and Angelina Zavalskia, note on their YouTube channel, that their grandmother used to sing them the Yiddish folk song, ....
