The St. Joseph Public Schools Board of Education has outlined for the community its return to learn plan for the fall. Reading a statement during this week’s meeting, board President Barry Conybeare said the plan is to be flexible in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Transmission rates in the county and within the community of St. Joseph Public Schools are currently low,” Conybeare read. “If they remain low, then we have high confidence that the upcoming school year will look and feel very much like a normal school year.” Conybeare said the plan is for a return to in-person learning. A virtual option will be offered to those who want it, and the schools will be ready to go back to virtual learning if needed. How about vaccines? ....
July 12, 2021 It was a packed house at Monday’s meeting of the St. Joseph Public Schools Board of Education as residents came out to learn more about the district’s new strategic plan. There has been commentary on social media speculating the plan includes teaching critical race theory, but board president Barry Conybeare read a statement clarifying critical race theory is not in the curriculum. Following that, public comments focused on other matters. Superintendent Jenny Fee told WSJM News it was encouraging to see a high turnout. “Turnout was fabulous,” Fee said. “I loved to see all the engagement that this community had, and it was a true testament to how much concern and care they have for the schools and their kids and the community as a whole.” ....

June 29, 2021 The St. Joseph Public Schools Board of Education has approved a new strategic plan for the 2021-2022 school year centered on equity and inclusion for all students. It’s the result of months of work by staff, the administration, families, and the school board. Interim Superintendent Kelly Gaideski says the plan stems out of a “commitment to ensure that every student is cared for emotionally and academically in St. Joseph Public Schools.” This first-year plan is part of a three to five year framework that will continue to be developed under the direction of incoming Superintendent Jenny Fee. It includes five goal areas with commitments under each goal. The goal areas are Data Collection and Analysis, Systems of Support, Framework for Learning, Communication Systems and Business Services, and Partnerships and Projects. April 13, 2021 The St. Joseph Public Schools Board of Education has approved a contract with new superintendent Jennifer Fee. The board unanimously approved the three-year agreement during a special meeting Tuesday. It calls for a base salary of $158,000. Board President Barry Conybeare says Fee will start as superintendent on July 1, and the board is “looking forward to her leadership in ensuring high levels of learning and well-being for all at SJPS.” Fee was selected by the board from an applicant pool of nineteen. She’s currently the assistant superintendent for instruction at the East Grand Rapids Public School District. She’s also been the high school principal, the assistant principal, and a teacher. ....
