Tears filled the eyes of Victoria Shears once she took the stage at Weaver High School after she was announced as the Hartford Public Schools 2021 Teacher of the Year Thursday evening.
“It’s like a nice setting to be in and it makes getting an education easier I think,” said Moore. “And I can pretty much always get help whenever I need it.”
Moore and her brother Gary are top ten national track and field athletes, and they were at the city’s vaccine clinic for high school students Thursday.
“This week we decided to kick off a youth campaign of sixteen years and over to ensure that our youth had access to vaccinations,” said New Haven Health Director Maritza Bond.
Hall of fame coach Jim Calhoun was also there to do what he does best: coach.
For the last couple of months, Josiah has been enrolled in the hybrid learning model and told NBC Connecticut he s had his share of hard days. Being at home felt very constricting and it felt as though I couldn t learn as much as I was learning full-time, said Perez-Henry.
Prior to the decision, school leaders were consulting with health officials about what needed to happen to get students safely back in the classroom. Our schools have low positivity rates for staff and for our students and the fact that we ve been able to implement our safety mitigations strategies helped with our decision, said Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez, superintendent for Hartford Public Schools. We heard loud and clear that families needed to have that option so we worked to the best of our ability to provide options to give families that option.
Hartford Public School students who live in the city missed an average of one in five days during the first semester, as mostly-virtual learning compounded the struggles of already-disadvantaged communities.
