Jefferson County, DEC install turtle crossing on Point Peninsula, part of larger push to save Blanding's turtles | Jefferson County


CHAUMONT BAY — The Jefferson County highway department just installed its first official “turtle crossing,” meant to help a local threatened species of turtle move between the Chaumont Bay and Lake Ontario without getting hit by cars.
The crossing is a buried concrete pipe, which connects a marshy area of the Chaumont Bay to a space near a state-owned boat launch into Lake Ontario. Nearby populations of Blanding’s turtles, with their characteristic yellow chin and throat, are relatively plentiful in the area and can pass through the tube without ever having to cross the road above.
As part of a $5.4 million project funded by the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative to raise County Route 57, also known as Isthmus Road, and prevent it from flooding during high water events, county highway crews worked with the state Department of Environmental Conservation to install the roughly 100-foot long oval concrete pipe underneath the roadwa ....

William Eber Barton


CHAUMONT- William Eber Barton, only child of William Edward Barton and Marion Myers Barton, was born on October 5th, 1936. He passed away peacefully at his home on Cheever Road Chaumont, NY surrounded by his loving family on June 13th, 2021. Arrangements are entrusted to North Country Cremation Service, Chaumont.
He grew up in Lafargeville and attended Lafargeville school.
He married Marsh Schmitte on June 13, 1974 in Limerick, NY. His first marriage to Carol Jobson ended in divorce.
Surviving besides his wife are four sons: William, Kenneth (Vicki), John (Candy), and Edward (Amy) all of Chaumont; five daughters: Lisa, Chaumont, Teresa (Dan) Davenport, Liverpool, Trina Rust, Chaumont, Sherri (Brett) Middlestate, Chaumont, Kristin Henderson, Chaumont. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. ....
