But when you take reliable electric power off the grid right before summer, and then you warm up in the summer, you might miss that power you took off the grid.
New York closed its Indian Point (ignore the politically incorrect name) nuclear plant on April 30, 2021. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s write-up of the closing includes this interesting bit.
Indian Point Unit 3 was one of New York’s 10 largest electricity generators; it produced over 270 TWh of carbon-free electricity since it began operating. Because of Indian Point Unit 3’s retirement, a large amount of new carbon-free generating capacity will need to come online to help meet the state’s CES goal.

BUCHANAN, N.Y., May 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR) today completed the sale of the subsidiaries that own Indian Point Energy Center to a Holtec International subsidiary, which plans to complete major decommissioning activities at the site decades sooner than if Entergy had continued to own the facility. The final operating unit at the site, Unit 3, was shut down by Entergy on April 30, 2021, after generating electricity safely and reliably for the last 45 years.
Indian Point Unit 1 was shut down in 1974. Indian Point Unit 2 was shut down in April 2020.

Major coronavirus metrics continue to head lower in the US, and now also globally. New cases in the US during the week ending May 8th were down 18.6% from new cases during the week ending May 1st, and are now down 83.3% from the January peak; this week also saw fewer new cases than any week since September. This week s US deaths attributed to Covid were 6.8% lower than the prior week s, and down 80.5% from the January high; US Covid deaths are now at the lowest rate since since the second week of July.

The New York Independent System Operator peakload averaged 16.399 GW, up 3% year on year, according to ISO data. ISO population-weighted average temperatures climbed 7.8% year on year into the low 50s F, which pulled down heating-degree days 21.4%, according to CustomWeather data.
Spot prices
NYISO Zone J NYC on-peak day-ahead locational marginal prices averaged $26.31/MWh in April, a jump of 60.4% year on year, while on-peak real-time averaged $27.26/MWh, 72.7% higher than a year ago, according to ISO data.
Helping drive up power prices, spot gas at Transco Zone 6 spot climbed 41% year on year to average $2.127/MMBtu in April, according to S&P Global Platts pricing data.
