Johnson City may have found its new visitors center

After spending years in a building just down the street from City Hall, Johnson City’s new visitors center could soon settle in a local historic landmark.
According to their draft agenda, city commissioners are scheduled Thursday to consider buying the two-story portion of the former Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railway depot building for $750,000 from Beacon Financial Credit Union.
The building would house the Johnson City Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Johnson City Development Authority and one or two employees from the city’s communications and marketing department.
Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Brenda Whitson said the location stood out because it’s at a nexus downtown, having easy access to Interstate 26 as well as multiple businesses and recreational opportunities. The visitors center is currently in the Chamber of Commerce building at 603 E. Market St. ....

BizWest Roundtable: Labor shortages top issues affecting NoCo health-care institutions – BizWest

A myriad of factors has affected the ability of health-care institutions in Northern Colorado to find qualified workers mainly nurses and certified nursing assistants but the pandemic has proved to be one of the most intractable.
Several health-care executives shared their insights Tuesday morning at a BizWest CEO Roundtable on Health Care. Roundtable events in which business executives share their challenges and successes are sponsored in Northern Colorado by Plante Moran accounting firm, Elevations Credit Union and Berg Hill Greenleaf Ruscitti law firm. Tuesday, health-care executives talked about labor issues, the prospects of a “public option” state law affecting insurance premiums, positive developments that came out of the pandemic and collaboration between competitors. ....

Mark from Golden writes,
“What’s Driving You Crazy? Hi, Jayson. Why are there two Colorado Boulevard exits in the state of Colorado? There’s one in Denver, obviously, but there’s also one in Idaho Springs on westbound I-70. I thought exit names were to be unique in any one state.”
This is one of the most interesting questions I have received over the years. There is no official requirement in Colorado, or the United States, where exit names have to be unique to one location, although most are. ....

My hosting stint is proof that you are never too old to do something different. One of the things that attracted me was having to brush up on topics that take me a bit out of my comfort zone. Many years ago, as a young general news reporter, I covered the early days of TV-am. It was a huge story for tabloids and broadsheets alike. For the broadsheets, independent morning news TV represented a major shake up in the media and business ecosystem busy transforming itself into something unrecognisable from the media world we grew up in. For tabloids like The Mirror, we had a daily diet of stories about some of the biggest names in TV the “Big Five” presenters David Frost, Michael Parkinson, Anna Ford, Robert Kee and Angela Rippon. ....

Johnson City interviews search firms as it prepares to recruit city manager

Johnson City commissioners are preparing to make perhaps the most consequential decision of their tenure.
After about 15 years in the position, City Manager Pete Peterson is planning to retire at the end of 2021. As commissioners gear up to pick his replacement, the body interviewed four national search firms over the span of two hours last Thursday.
The four recruiting agencies — Baker Tilley, Strategic Government Resources, Slavin Management Consultants and Colin Baenziger & Associates — were whittled down from an initial list of 10 that responded to the city’s recent request for proposals.
To narrow down the candidates, Human Resources Director Steve Willis evaluated each firm’s public sector experience, their number of placements and what percentage of their placements were city managers versus other positions. Mayor Joe Wise also received all 10 proposals. ....
