Legal threat stops work on mine project in Tasmania's Tarkine | Tasmania

“Its sudden cessation of work after receiving our letter indicating we would take court action indicates that their own legal advice concurs with ours,” he said. “The arrogance of this company proceeding as it has is monumental.”
The company rejected the suggestion it had acted unlawfully, or that its works at the proposed tailings dam site affected old-growth forest. It said it had been limited to trackwork. It had been forced to “pause” its operation while it dealt with what it described as “unwarranted legal threats”.
“Our current approvals cover this work under state legislation and are necessary for compliance with commonwealth assessments,” it said. “We will continue to work with the government in relation to the approval requirements for the project.” ....

Australia Halts China Owned Mine Expansion in Tasmania Over Environmental Outcry

Australia Halts China Owned Mine Expansion in Tasmania Over Environmental Outcry
The Australian Federal Government has temporarily ceased plans to prolong the life of a majority Chinese state-owned mine in Tasmania following public outcry over its proposal to decimate a section of rainforest.
The plan to extend the shelf life of Minerals and Metals Group’s (MMG) 85-year-old Rosebery Mine for another 40 years was put on hold after the Department of Environment found the project required assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act before it could proceed.
The zinc, copper, lead, and gold mine and the 500 workers it sustained required new space to store its waste, and intended to construct a 140-hectare dam to hold the mine’s tailings. The plan would see a total of 285 hectares of wilderness, including parts of the Tarkine rainforest, cleared in the process. ....

Rosebery, Australia – On June 17, Anthony Houston was arrested after trying to block all industrial traffic on the island of Tasmania, in the southern Australian state of the rainforest.
A local businessman and farmer put up a chair in the middle of an entrance path to protest the clearing of a large part of a 439,000-acre (1,085,000-acre) old forest tree. , Known as Tarkine or Takanya.
Tarkine, remote and sparsely populated, is home to many endangered species and has rugged coastal heaths, grassy forests and diverse landscapes that make up Gondwana-era vegetation, helping to form Australia’s largest tropical rainforest. It also includes a mine owned by the China Minerals and Metals Group, which aims to clean up a 285-hectare (704-hectare) area – roughly the equivalent of about 350 football pitches – for a new mining waste storage facility, also known as a tailings mine. ....
