Today in history: Cadillac residents warned of 'book agent scheme'

April 26, 1921
A warning has been received in Cadillac from several cities regarding a group of three women who now are covering Michigan in the interest of “Child Conservation‘ which is said to be nothing more than a cleverly covered book agent scheme. Local child welfare organizations are formed, the purpose of which is to get women to sign up for about $50 worth of books that are worth less than one-tenth that sum according to an investigation made in various other cities. Marshall, Monroe, Ionia and other cities have recently been “worked‘ by the promoters. Better books on child welfare work can be obtained free from the Department of Labor at Washington or the Michigan Department of Health, it is said, and local women’s clubs now organized in every city are able to handle all the functions of the high-sounding new organization. In some cities where these were formed the groups already have broken up soon after the promoters left. But the members s ....

Considered long overdue, a committee has formed to honor former Corsicana Police Officer Sgt. Robert (Bob) Glenwood Robinson, Badge No. 642, who was killed in the line of duty 58 years ago on Dec. 23, 1962.
A Bronze Statue has been commissioned, which will become part of Corsicana’s Bronze Statue Tour, depicting Sgt. Robinson as well as honoring two other former Police Officers who have died in the line of duty in Corsicana; Charlie Maddux in 1904 and Vess Arp in 1924.
All three slain officers were inducted into the Texas Peace Officers Memorial in Austin many years ago.
Corsicana resident Shirley Robinson, sister of Bob Robinson, said she had hoped to honor her brother in some way for years, and recently reached out to a group of people including family members to form an official committee to begin collecting donations toward a Bronze statue. ....

Chief Ernest Harris was the only witness for the people. He testified that he swore out a search warrant and found liquor on the Journeau premises Dec. 14. John Mack and Al Smith accompanied him, he said, and found a gallon jug of homemade whisky under Mrs. Journeau’s skirts in a room just back of her soft drink and tobacco store at 401 N. Mitchell St. There was two inches of the same kind of hootch in a quart bottle full of some other kind of whiskey in a bread box in the store. The defense tried to establish that all the liquor was in a dwelling but Prosecutor W.H. Yearnd brought out that this was not the fact. It was also testified that Mrs. Journeau had had roomers which indicated that there might be some difficulty in establishing that the rooms back of the s ....
